This postcard is the earliest golf postcard known. Its type and size (approx:
4.8 x 2.9 inches = 120 x 74 mm) prove that it was issued before 1894.
The text, which is a request to attend a meeting of the Finance Committee, is signed
by Gilbert Gorton, Honorary Treasurer. We know very few about Gorton as the Royal North
Devon Golf Club had a major fire damage in 1923. But Bill Anderson was able to find some
valuable information: According to the Golfing Annual, he was Honorary Treasurer in 1892
and he became Secretary in 1894.
Then, it is a good guess to suppose that is postcard was issued before 1894.
Have anybody any better information? We would really appreciate to know. Please write us:
